As a black, queer woman in a white, hetero-dominated industry, my mission is to foster inclusivity, diversity, and acceptance across every aspect of my business. I truly believe addressing the lack of diverse narratives in the wedding industry allows ALL love stories to be honored, and makes weddings about authentic connections where couples feel seen and understood!
When these two reached out to me about taking their engagement photos at The Washington National Cathedral, I was SO excited. As a Maryland wedding photographer, I get to photograph in historic places all the time.
From the Library of Congress, which you can see here… to the National Portrait Gallery (here!) I feel so privileged to have such beautiful architecture and locations to work with.

Yes! The Cathedral requires a photography location permit for professional photography sessions, including engagement photos. Basic permits start at $250 for up to two hours, with higher rates during peak months like April, May, and October. You’ll need to apply at least two weeks in advance, and approval isn’t guaranteed. Here’s the page on their website all about permits!
One important detail: permits cover approved exterior areas and the Bishop’s Garden, but not the interior of the Cathedral for engagement sessions.
For fewer crowds, I’d consider a weekday morning! Ideally outside peak tourist seasons. However, the Cathedral hosts services and special events, so we’d want to check availability before choosing your date.

They were going for a timeless engagement session look! So the bride wore a classic white halter dress, and brought a hat to use in some photos. Her makeup was glam, with hollywood curls in her hair. She looked GORGEOUS.
Her groom didn’t look too bad himself!!! In a black suit without a tie. It gave that suave James Bond vibe that perfectly fit the location.
We spent the afternoon wandering through the cathedral, stopping to take photos and enjoy the moment. These two nailed the editorial, upscale classic bride and groom vibes too!

We can pick your time and date, secure your permit and spend a lovely day at the historical site capturing your “fiancé era”. It’s such a fun and brief season of life. I love helping you document what it felt like.
