While it’s true that most of my work centers around engagements, weddings and elopements… it’s also true that I love photographing expecting mamas too! So many of my clients circle back around to me within a few years of their big day and want pregnancy photos. It’s always a ‘yes please!’ from me! So let’s chat about an in-studio maternity session! Is it right for you? Or do you want to take photos on-location? 

When you’re expecting a little one, there are already soooo many changes going on! Your body is changing. The nursery & home. Your day-to-day life! All the doctors appointments! It’s a whole thing. 

Your maternity photos should feel like a little escape from all the noise. An oasis to focus solely on your new little family. That sweet babe! And how you feel as an expecting parent.

Knowing how you want to feel in those moments will help you decide if an in-studio maternity session is right for you. 

If you have a specific location you really love, you might want to go there! Maybe you walk at the same park every morning and want to document that part of your experience. Or maybe it’s a favorite coffee shop! A lot of my expecting families like to photograph at their home, since it makes the photos into a little time capsule of this pregnancy. 

But a lot of my expecting parents choose to do an in-studio maternity session. And there’s a reason for that! 

Not only does it remove all the distractions so the images really focus on you… It also feels like a little escape from real life. The neutral environment really allows you to unhook from all the stressors around pregnancy, and just connect with your baby.

These two reached out to me during the second trimester about doing their photos!

We scheduled them for later in the pregnancy to really get that baby bump bumpin!! This was an extra special session for me, because I had documented their entire love story! From their engagement session, their wedding day, and now?? Their pregnancy! It really is always such a surreal and wonderful thing for me as a Maryland photographer when my clients bring me in to photograph all their milestones. 

For this in-studio maternity session, we went with a neutral outfit palette so we could really keep all the focus on that cute bump!!

They wore denim, black and white pieces. And we played around with posing on the studio furniture. I really loved capturing their connection again. There’s something really special about documenting people at their wedding day as they start a whole new phase of their lives. And then capturing them as they take steps into that phase. Becoming parents is such a huge life moment, and as a photographer I LOVE seeing my clients step into that role. 

I know the newborn phase can be tough, but having kids is so rewarding and wonderful. And capturing your pregnancy with a maternity session is something you’ll never forget. Just like all other phases with kids: it goes freakin’ quick!!!
